Unplanned unplug and training update

Well- two weeks went by quickly! I didn’t plan on taking a blog break but turns out I took quite a long one. I didn’t write posts, I didn’t comment on others blogs, and I had to clear my Bloglovin’ feed a few times. I think it was the break I needed.

Let’s get right into the training update!

It’s now less than three weeks until Ironman Canada, which means it’s TAPER TIME! I feel like it snuck up on me again just when I was getting into a training groove.

After the 185km confidence-boosting bike, training has been pretty steady. My legs still feel like they get tired quicker and stay tired longer, but it could also be that I tried to get in two solid training weeks.

A couple weekends ago my sister-in-law, Alicia, was in town for Kelly’s dad’s 60th birthday. She’s training for Ironman Canada (her first!!) so brought her bike out.

Kelly, Alicia, and I set out for a 100-mile ride that Saturday. The sky was threatening all day, but we had such a fabulous ride talking the entire time. It flew by! Of course we ended up getting rained on in the last 10km so I fell a few miles short of 100.

On Sunday we celebrated my father-in-law’s milestone birthday. My mother-in-law threw him a surprise party with over 80 people. I think he was genuinely surprised!

This past weekend I completed my toughest workout of the season, a triple brick. My version of the triple brick is quite tame compared to some I read in the blog world and totaled 120km of biking and 15km of running.

It was windy and got hot, but I loved it! I was able to push harder on each bike than if I did the distances altogether. And it felt good to run off the bike. I’ve only done one, two-mile run off the bike since Coeur d’Alene so it was good to get a few in this weekend.

My favourite part of the day was my first bike ride. The sun was just rising and there was fog laced through the beautiful farmers’ fields. I didn’t want to stop and take photos but eventually I did when I was actually in the middle of a fog patch.

I also got in the full Ironman distance swim this weekend. It’s mentally tough for me in a 25m pool (160 lengths) but I got through it to help with my confidence come race day!

What’s new in your world?

Do you take blog breaks?

I take blog breaks while traveling. It’s nice to let it go for a little while and enjoy real life 🙂

  2. Glad you enjoyed your blog break! I take breaks on vacation or if I just get too busy. I often remind myself “You do this for fun” so if it starts to be stressful, I’ll just take a few days off. Normally I come back refreshed and happy to return! 🙂

  3. We missed you while you were on your bloggy break, but it sounds like you had a great time with family and enjoyed some awesome IM training. Way to go on the swim. It is TOUGH to swim that long in a pool. And it’s hard to keep count!

  4. P.S. Thanks for the recommendation to read ‘A Dog’s Purpose.’ I finished it on Saturday. So good! Had me in tears at the end.

  5. Woohoo for taper week!!! Sure missed reading your updates/posts but I am so happy you took a break! Tuning out is good for the soul I think 🙂 Speaking of which, I think I need to take one soon. Way to go with all those work outs – sounds like you are definitely ready for Whistler! I was in Whistler yesterday and it was gorgeous… you guys will have some pretty incredible views during your race!

  6. You were missed! Glad all is good in your world though. 🙂 I haven’t taken a blog-break yet but I’m considering one before I get too boring and/or annoying… 😉 Happy tapering.

  7. Good for you for taking a blog break! I’m going to schedule one of those in the near future! Just think in three weeks you will have another ironman under your belt!

  8. That swim distance would kill me!! Great job – you are going to do fantastic in your Ironman.
Glad you enjoyed a break and some family time!!!

  9. glad you took the time you needed! i think everybody needs breaks from everything at some point. i’ve cut back to 2-3 posts days a week over the past few weeks, just because i needed to in order to make room for a couple others things going on and still maintain my relative sanity, but ill get back into more frequent postings soon. its just a natural cycle in my opinion.

  10. I don’t know how you have time to blog with all your training anyway! Glad to hear it is going well. Cycling in the early morning fog sounds fun!

  11. I have what may appear as a dumb question… Do you actually have to count each lap as you swim or do you swim on time assuming you’re swimming a steady pace?

Can’t wait to read about your next IronMan. Will someone be tweeting on your behalf?

I had a great weekend because my son got engaged, but you commented on my happy post, so that’s old news! 🙂

    • I bet you’re still on cloud nine from your son’s engagement!
That’s not a dumb question at all! I count each lap as I swim. I know some people just swim by time, but I like to make sure I get in the exact distance I’m going for- nothing less and nothing more! I have a Garmin 910 that actually counts laps but I rarely wear it in the pool for some reason.

  12. I have been on a bit of a blog break. I can’t seem to get myself to sit down and write something, so instead I just enjoy reading other’s blogs! Sounds like you are more than ready for Canada. Yay!

  13. oh girl, i feel ya. I have done that many times. Glad you did it and got away. Life first, blog later.. or whenever. ❤

  14. Sounds like you are training hard and doing well!! I just took a baby break while in central Oregon but I am getting caught up as we speak.
I can’t believe IMC is so soon!! I can’t wait to see what you think of it!!!
I also can’t believe you doing 4K in the pool….you hate to swim!! 🙂
I am doing well…2nd relay last weekend…still seeing the new guy…which is super fun….on to HTC training!!! 🙂

    • Yes- I can’t wait to read more about the last relay and this new man!
The 4k in a pool isn’t fun, but I knew I’d feel better if I just did it! I think I’m allergic to chlorine though- I sneezed 12 times in a row when I got home!

  15. RIGHT before I came to your blog..like 10 seconds ago..I was thinking about what it would be like to take a scheduled blog break. I think it would be refreshing. I would want to completely unplug from all technology! Glad training is continuing to go well!

  16. Wow, that’s a lot of laps! Great job with the training. New stuff for me? Hmmm… not much to report. Just baby stuff. Gosh I wish I had something else to talk about these days…. haha

  17. I love reading about your incredible adventures and feats 🙂 And yay for blogging breaks…totally deserved and much needed!

  18. runnerbydefault

Everyone needs blog breaks every now and then. Plus I don’t have that much to say if I am not traveling! Good job on your training swim. That is a lot of laps in a pool!!!

  19. I’m in the middle of a big blog break! It feels great but my blog lovin’ has tons of updates. The good news is that I can delete them without feeling guilty and know that I will be back commenting soon : )
